With the new EU-US tariff agreement set to come into effect on 1st August 2025, the Local Enterprise Office (LEO) Carlow is urging businesses to assess the potential impact and to seek support where needed.

The revised trade deal introduces a 15% tariff on most EU exports to the United States, creating concern and uncertainty for many sectors. While some elements of the agreement are still being clarified, LEO Carlow is encouraging any local business—particularly those involved in exporting—to get in touch for guidance and support.

Kieran Comerford, Head of Economic Development & Enterprise at Carlow County Council, said:

“This new agreement gives businesses a baseline from which to begin planning, but we recognise that there is still a lot of uncertainty—especially regarding sector-specific impacts. That’s why we’re encouraging any business that thinks it might be affected to reach out.

We can offer access to export consultants, customs training, and resources like the Market Explorer Grant, which supports businesses in identifying and exploring new markets. We’re here to help businesses navigate the next six months and beyond, minimise potential disruption, and explore new opportunities.”

Commenting on the importance of proactive support for local business, Cllr. Ken Murnane, Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council, added:

“Carlow’s enterprise community is innovative and resilient, but the introduction of new tariffs requires preparation and support. We want businesses to know that they are not alone—we have a strong local support system through the Local Enterprise Office. Now is the time to plan, adapt and take advantage of the resources available.”

Across the country, Local Enterprise Offices will be working closely with client companies to help them understand the implications of the new trade environment. This will include assistance with customs processes, tariff classification, and origin planning to help reduce costs. Eligible businesses can also apply for financial assistance, such as the Market Explorer Grant, to diversify into new markets outside the US.

Established in 2014, the Local Enterprise Offices in each local authority are funded by Enterprise Ireland and are the first-stop shop for anyone looking to start or grow a business in Ireland. Since their inception, LEOs have supported the creation of over 80,000 jobs nationwide and continue to offer vital services including mentoring, training, expert advice, and financial supports.

Businesses seeking more information or advice on navigating the new EU-US tariff agreement can contact LEO Carlow directly by phone or email.
